The Tech Gap

The modern NHS is under significant pressure to find new and increasingly innovative methods to reduce costs and become more streamlined. Reforming a system as complex as the NHS in 2017 is not straightforward and the logistical challenges therein are manifest by the lack of such sweeping change in the recent past.

The Tech Gap

The Context

Following on from the Wachter Review will mean engaging with the Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) which have been put in place in 44 regional locales. The STPs have set out a framework for change building on existing Local Digital Roadmaps which at their core set out a technological reformation of the NHS.

Part of the challenge is to utilise modern digital and clinical technologies, the best software programmes and implement world leading IT services. Without a concerted effort to change, the NHS risks being put under more pressure and rendered unable to meet the changing demands of patients.

The Government is keen on continuing its support for this programme as evidenced by an additional £86 million being invested into technology in July 2017, signalling a commitment that will be welcomed by cash strapped departments. Funding will be targeted as follows: £39m for academic health science networks to locally assess the benefits of new technologies , a fund-matched £35m for companies to develop technology specifically for the NHS; up to £6m over three years to help SMEs test innovative medicines and devices and £6m to help integrate technology into current NHS practises such as staff training.

NHS focused Solutions

In September this year, the UK Health Show will address the digital challenges facing and opportunities for the NHS with local experts who have been working on improving efficiency though technology sharing their work with senior healthcare professionals and decision makers to help the NHS and the wider sector promote and improve service delivery for better healthcare outcomes across the UK.

Industry specialist Peter Gill, the Director of Informatics for the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch NHS Trust, will be speaking at the UK Health Show on how the Dorset One NHS Vanguard has been implementing such technological updates and what that means for their Sustainability and Transformation Partnership which has recently been ranked as “Outstanding” by NHS England. Peter is at the forefront of the successful development of the Dorset STP and will be leading the implementation of technological updates for the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch NHS Trust. The central themes of his talk will be on the establishment of ’Shared Care Records’ and the integration of several patient and support services.
